Description: San Fernando is a small island port in the tyrannical grip of the giant gangster wolf, Smiley O'Hannigan. Here, barely surviving and on the edge of starvation, there seems to be no future for young Johnny and his mother. But when Johnny finds a key to the back door of Smiley's fortress and treasure vault, he has a chance to change everything. Johnny's always dreamed of being a hero like his father, but he's about to learn that heroism isn't quite as easy--or as simple--as he thought.

Customer's Reviews for Smiley and the Hero
Smiley and the Hero is a thrilling, well-written story. Johnny seizes a chance to steal from notorious crime boss Smiley O'Hannigan and in so-doing realises that in order to survive, he has to bring the big wolf down. But how? The story is intense, mostly thanks to Smiley's quite mentally brutal nature (the descriptions of his "punishments" are quite graphic), as well as Johnny's dubious relationships with his shifty friend Rab and Tess the wolf. All in all, an exciting read, and Cooner's illustrations are beautiful.
