Created as a gatepiece illustration for M. C. A. Hogarth's short story "Rosettes and Ribbons", the original artwork was inked and shaded with gray markers and black pens. Transforming that grayscale image into a full-color print proved complex and difficult -- but, in the end, rewarding in subtle and surprising ways. The art was designed to match the narrative passage being depicted, albeit with some artistic license: the background was simplified considerably, as was the clothing on Peli (the character at the right). In addition, Peli appears about a foot taller than she actually is, in order to balance the composition. | |
