Artists Who Want to Sell Prints or Portfolios

QuickNavigator

What We Pay for Prints

Ah yes, the important stuff, show me the money!  Here's the money you will get depending on the price of the print.

  • Selling for $5 to $10 - You get 50% of the price
  • Selling for $10.01 to $20 - You get 55% of the price
  • Selling for more than $20.01 - You get 60% of the price

So, if you sell an 8.5x11 print for $6, you get $3.  If you sell an 11x17 print for $12, you get $6.60.  We may need to change that slightly if you are selling a large color portfolio, or we may impose a minimum price requirement for the portfolio.

Submitting Samples

First, contact Sean through our contact page with an address where he can get samples of your prints you want to sell.  Or, if you want, you can mail them to:

Rabbit Valley Comics
290 Turnpike Rd Ste 6 PMB 390
Westborough, MA 01581-2843
USA

Mark it with 'DO NOT BEND OR FOLD!' on the envelope.

We can't sell certain stuff...

To use any copyrighted character, you must have the permission of the copyright holder.  Now, that's fine for people you know, characters on MUCKs and so on, but if it has a commercial character, we're not taking the chance.  Even parody is out.  We don't get sued, you don't get sued, all is well in the world.

We also have some other restrictions on content to comply with US Laws. We do not accept images depecting use of illegal drugs, beastiality, or pedophilia. Our contract requires that you warrant the images are not obscene.

What happens next...

I have to give you the okay to sell prints.  We have a rather unique return policy at the store now, so I want to be sure that everything that we sell is of the highest quality.

You've Been Approved - Sign the Contract

We have a contract for on demand prints that you should sign and return to us via snail mail OR scan a copy in low resolution (jpeg, gif) and email it to us.  We will email this contract to you.

Why do you need a contract?  It shows what you'll be getting from us.  And, it protects us from liability if you use someone's copyrighted character without permission.

Scanning the Originals

This is VERY important.  We have some strict requirements for the scans....

  • It must be AT LEAST 300 DPI.  We prefer a larger DPI of 600 for higher quality when printing 11x17 prints.
  • It SHOULD be in CMYK format.  Photoshop has an option to convert to CMYK.  This lets our printer do the imaging in its native format (4 color printing) so it doesn't change the colors and darkness on you.  If you can't save in CMYK, keep it in RGB and we'll try our best to match colors.
  • Save the file in TIFF or Photoshop format.  Other formats (JPEG, GIF) can lose quality due to compression techniques built into their file formats.  BMP files are difficult to scale, losing quality on 11x17 prints.
  • You must include descriptions of all the files.  Include the title of the file, the title of the artwork, and a short description.  You can get fancy and include the type of media it was originally produced on and date of production...  The more descriptive, the happier customers get.

If you do not have a good scanner, we do.  We can scan your original artwork if you send it to us.  We'll gladly ship it back to you, and if you would like a disk with the high quality scans on it, no problem.  $2 and it's yours.

Sending the Files

We can take files on a few different types of media...

  • CD-ROM in Mac (preferred), DOS or ISO-92whatever format (as long as you can read it on a Mac, we're fine)
  • IBM or Mac Formatted ZIP Disk 100 or 250 MB (which can be returned)
  • Through our FTP site.  Email Sean for more information on how to use our FTP site.

What RABCO Does Now

We'll put your prints up on the web site as soon as possible.  For adult prints, we'll blank out the naughty bits for two reasons.  First, people tend not to steal and redistribute edited pictures.  Second, people tend to not just download and never buy the print.  Third, it keeps dirty pictures out of the hands of kids who shouldn't be seeing it.  Fourth, it keeps our ISP happy. :)

We'll put in at least one page of your prints in our catalog for the next print run.  Depending on the size of the catalog, you might get more space, but we'll still try to pick the best of the prints to go in there.

Now, to sell more prints, you need to advertise too!  Make a link from your web page to your prints page on Rabbit Valley.  Hit the newsgroups (alt.fan.furry, fur.artwork.*, yarf.*) and tell people that prints are available.

How and When You Get Paid

We send out checks at the end of every month to artists who have more than $20 in their account.  If you want to buy something from the store, let us know first!  We'll simply use the money in your account for purchasing nifty furry stuff.  YOU GET 125% OF YOUR ACCOUNT IF YOU CONVERT TO STORE CREDIT.

If you're an international customer (outside the US and Canada), the rules might be a little bit different to help on exchange rates...  You can tell us how much you want to be in your account before sending a check.  It saves you money in exchange fees and check cashing charges.  We can also send international postal money orders.

I've got something that will sell a zillion copies...

So, you want to sell us something so we can sell it at the store?  Here's how to pitch the idea to us.

  1. Have a sample either digital or final finished product and get it to us.  We like seeing completed projects.
  2. Write a blurb telling us what it's about.  There is only so much the review folks can look at in a day, and there's only so much money we can spend at one time.  The better the blurb, the more we'll be interested.
  3. TELL US THE COVER PRICE.  We need to know how much you're expecting to sell this for.
  4. If you send us a physical copy of your product, and you would like it back, include a self addressed stamped envelope for return.

We buy items at a discount, usually 50%.  So, if you have a book for sale that has a cover price of $5.00, we will pay $2.50 for the book.  Only under very special situations will we make an exception to this policy.
